EVOLVING ACCESSORY SPACE

Harvey Monroe of Terraplen Architects has a long-standing connection with this home and its neighborhood. He was involved in the original development of the Pueblo Alegre neighborhood, where the residence is located. Over the years, Terraplen has overseen two major transformations of this home—first in 2003, when a 600-square-foot addition and garage remodel created an artist studio, and most recently, when the studio was converted into a guest house intended for rental use.

For the latest remodel, Terraplen collaborated with general contractor Eagle Construction on the build and worked with Lloyd & Associates Architects on the interior design.

Converting the space required significant behind-the-walls upgrades, including connecting and enhancing the existing mini-split, electrical, and plumbing systems. The transformation into a fully functional guest house involved the construction of a kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom, as well as the installation of several new commercial-grade windows to create a light and airy atmosphere. While structural modifications were necessary to support the placement of the windows, Monroe describes the project as “more of a finish project than a structural build.”

The remodel team preserved the structure’s original Pueblo-style exterior, while adding refined craftsmanship details to the facade and yard fencing. Inside, the design shifted to a more contemporary aesthetic, particularly in the kitchen and bathroom. A barn-style door was introduced to divide the living room and bedroom, serving both as a design focal point and a space-saving solution.

During the five-month project, the designers and builders worked closely with the homeowner, making real-time adjustments to maximize space and achieve her vision for cabinetry, closets, and bathroom finishes. Additionally, certain elements from the original 2003 addition, such as doors, had aged and needed to be redone. The project was completed on time, successfully delivering a contemporary and functional guest house that met the homeowner’s goals.
